Training and Development in action

Training and Development in action

The Company’s vision is to create sustainable shareholder value by being the premier transatlantic defence and aerospace company.

To achieve our aim, we have established five guiding values; Customers, People, Performance, Partnering, Innovation and Technology.

The People value is key to achieving our aim and is described as:
“People – our Greatest Strength”

All our people will be encouraged to realise their full potential as valued members of the team.

To assist our employees to realise their full potential, we are committed to a self-sustaining culture of learning.  This process begins on the day you become an employee of BAE Systems, and our Induction programme is the launch platform.

Our Induction process has three levels – Company, local and departmental.  Within the first month of your employment, you will be invited to an Induction event that will focus on the first two levels of the programme.  Your new manager will also have a vital role to play in the third level of your induction programme, focussing on your new department and your new role.

From joining BAE Systems, you will take part in the personal development and performance management processes.

Personal Development Reviews (PDR)

BAE Systems believe the ongoing review of each employee’s performance and development is essential to success as a high performance company and that every employee will be given a formal performance development review at least twice per year.

The aims of the PDR are to provide:

  • Clear and measurable objectives, which focus on business targets and the behaviours, required to achieve these
  • Clear feedback on performance through the review of objectives
  • Essential information for development and career planning decisions

Performance Management

Our ‘Management Resource Review’ assesses the strengths and development needs of the leadership population.  It helps to ensure that the leadership capability of the organisation is identified, maintained and developed to meet business and individual needs.

The Executive Council management resource review focuses on the senior leadership population and key successors to this group.

We also carry functional resource reviews with a primary focus of identifying capability and talent outputs relating to each function and with a secondary purpose to identify any issues that link and cross over into other functional areas, e.g. Engineering, Commercial, Procurement, Sales & Marketing etc.

Learning

To achieve our business objectives, we depend on the skills, innovation and contribution of all our employees.  We aim to get the best from our employees by treating them with respect, creating a supportive work environment, and providing opportunities for training and development.

BAE Systems will continually grow the capacity of its workforce by developing its skills, knowledge, competencies and confidence.  Opportunities for learning will be designed to align with the needs of the Business, and grow the capacity of everybody in BAE Systems to meet the challenges facing the Company both now and in the future. The Company will encourage positive attitudes and behaviours that motivate its people to learn, share their learning with others, and apply and deploy their learning to the benefit of BAE Systems. To achieve this line managers:

  • Ensure that staff have the required level of knowledge and skill to perform their role and deliver against their objectives
  • Encourage staff to develop within their current role
  • Identify, and assist employees to fulfil potential
  • Create a learning culture by providing opportunities for learning

Corporate learning and development frameworks, processes and training solutions maintained by the Company. The main areas being, Graduate Development, Personal Development, Functional Development (i.e. Engineering, Manufacturing, Finance) and Leadership and Management.  Access to the full range of L&D programmes are available via an Integrated Development Portfolio or local Learning Resource Centre.
