Nine undergraduates have given up their summer holidays to gain experience of the 'world of work' at BAE Systems in Barrow. The students spent an average of 10 weeks in the department of their choice. Here they were able to gain relevant competencies which will benefit their future careers.
The placements positions were diverse and included roles in departments such as Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, Commercial, HR, Operations, Communications, and Finance.
All students throughout were supported by Martin Pulford, Engineering Training Manager and their Placement Managers. The students were set objectives which will be assessed at their Placement Review
Sarah Greig, daughter of Alan Greig, who works at the shipyard, spent her placement in Communications and said, "The placement has been much more challenging than I expected, and I have enjoyed the responsibility that I have been given. I also had the opportunity to represent BAE Systems at the recent Navy Days exhibition in Plymouth".
Tom Bull, a student from Ulverston, described his experiences at the company, "I have had great time learning about getting involved in the real life application of engineering to an exciting large-scale industrial project".
The summer placement scheme is just one of the ways in which BAE Systems is looking at recruiting graduate young talent to the company. Other opportunities include the Graduate Development Framework, a two year programme or as an Industrial Placement (12 month Gap Year in Industry. Martin Pulford said: "It has been a pleasure working with this new talent and hopefully they have gained from the experience as we will have of them. It is hoped that the Summer Placements will be encouraged to return to work in Furness on completion of their degrees".
