Broughs unique fire service serves its community well

26 Jan 2006

The Brough Fire Service is unique in that, although it is part of the Humberside fire and rescue service, it is actually situated within the BAE Systems Brough site and as such, there is no other station within the Humberside area like it and possibly none within the British Fire Service.

Brough Fire station is manned by a retained fire crew that serves the East Riding of Yorkshire. The stations current personnel have a combined fire service of nearly 200 years, come from a complete cross section of the Brough sites workforce and are highly regarded within Humberside Fire Brigade.

The station became operational in 1945 and provides fire cover for a rapidly expanding local community area, plus many extremely busy motorways and A class roads. Local crews also attend many large incidents within the city of Hull and across the Humberside area.

Ian Johnson, a BAE Systems maintenance engineer and the station watch manager explains: The fire crew at Brough are all retained fire crew and although they work at BAE Systems they are ready to go to an incident the moment the call comes.

As the fire station is the local communitys primary fire service, personnel from the station are also involved in a variety of Community Fire Safety projects, such as visits to schools, local scouts, Girl Guide groups and many local open days and summer fete's. This work has recently been aided by BAE Systems making a donation to support the purchase of smoke detectors which are fitted free in homes in the local community. As well as providing fire cover to the local community the station also serves the Brough site assisting in high risk aircraft factory activities.
