BAE Systems employee takes the Iron Man challenge for charity

27 Sep 2006 | Ref. Ref: 270/2006

Frimley, United Kingdom. - BAE Systems employee Nicola Brown, who works in Frimley, completed the half Iron Man Triathlon in aid of Cancer Research UK on Saturday 9 September 2006

Nicola, who is a Business Development Manager for BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte), completed the event in 5hr 51 minutes and raised £1587 in sponsorship. Under its corporate Charity Challenge scheme, BAE Systems will be matching this amount, lifting the total donation to £3174.

Nicola said: “Thank you so much to everyone that has sponsored me! I had a great race, the atmosphere was fantastic and I felt great most of the way. It was the best feeling ever, and although the hardest thing physically that I have attempted to date, it felt fantastic to finish! Before last year I hadn’t taken sport seriously (and probably still don’t), but it really wasn’t as hard as I had thought it would be. Anyone can do this.”

The half Iron Man Triathlon, known as the Vitruvian, takes place at Rutland Water in Leicester and starts with an initial 1900 metre swim, which sets the standard for the rest of the race. The following 84km bike, which includes two climbs over the notorious Rutland Ripple and incorporates nearly 1000 metres of climbing, is just the second stage of suffering before the 21km run gets under way just to finish things off.

The sponsorship will support Cancer Research UK in its aim to conquer cancer through world-class research. Cancer Research UK is the UK's leading cancer charity; with a dedicated team of 3,000 scientists and an annual scientific spend of around £213 million. Its funds are raised almost entirely through voluntary donations.

BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte), headquartered at Frimley, has 500 employees based in a new state of the art building in Lyon Way. In addition to the core business functions, it manages the mission system for the Royal Navy’s new Aircraft Carrier, Networked Enabled Capabilities (NEC) for the battlefield as well as the latest Naval Warfare Training Systems. The company and its employees provide support and sponsorship to local and national charities.
