Divers Beach Reconnaissance Aid (DEBRA)

The Divers Beach Reconnaissance Aid (DEBRA) from BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies provides the diver with GPS-derived navigational information enabling quick and accurate beach reconnaissance operations.

Data logging
DEBRA measures and logs its depth and altitude from the seabed using a pressure sensor and echo sounder. This data, together with current GPS position in longitude and latitude or other grid reference system, is stored in the memory of the embedded processor unit. This provides a measurement of water depth at any particular grid co-ordinate. The manual entry control feature also enables measurement of the grid location and depth below sea surface of a particular feature or obstacle.

Diver navigation
DEBRA incorporates an electronic compass to allow navigation of the diver along a pre-determined survey grid. Prior to a mission, waypoints can be entered to provide precise control of the diver’s track.

Display
The electro luminescent display contains information to assist the survey task, including:

  • present heading
  • depth to bottom
  • distance travelled from origin time
  • direction required to maintain preset survey track
  • graphical plot of the seabed topography

Controls
Minimal controls ensure simplicity of operation. Designed to be operated by a neoprene gloved hand, controls provide positive indication of setting when operated in conditions of low visibility.

Data analysis
Data can be quickly downloaded onto a pc or laptop for analysis and presentation. The analysis software allows depth/position data to be overlaid onto an electronic chart, providing an accurate picture of the sea bed topography.
