Fire equipment OEMs have utilized uncooled IR camera cores manufactured by BAE Systems in IR cameras designed to meet the demanding environmental requirements of the fire service. Because they allow firefighters to “see” through smoke, IR cameras have been labeled as valuable life saving tools and incorporated in standard operating procedures. The key applications within the fire service include:
- Search and rescue
- Size-up — determine the relative location of the fire and extension based on the thermal profile
- Attack — allows firefighters to quickly locate the seat of the fire
- Overhaul — find remaining hot spots and extinguish to prevent re-kindle
