P2008 is the Advanced SATCOM Terrestrial Infrastructure System (ASTIS) Maritime Communications Element (MCE).
It provides and supports satellite communications equipment to complement the space segment being procured by project JP2008 Phase 3D. This project is managed under JP2008 Phase 3E and known as the Advanced SATCOM Terrestrial Infrastructure System (ASTIS).The infrastructure gives mobile and deployed forces the capability to transfer information for Command Control and to access bulk information via a broadcast system using satellite communications technology. It aims to extend the strategic level Defence Information Environment (DIE) to the operational and tactical environments. ASTIS will use the Defence payload on the Optus C1 satellite.
