Laser Warning Systems

For more than fifteen years, BAE Systems has been at the forefront of military laser warning technology. Our most recent technological success is the laser warning function of the AN/AAR-47(V)2 integrated missile and laser warning system (LWS). This achievement perfectly illustrates the high-performance, low-cost, and highly scalable features of our approach.

In the LWS program, BAE Systems demonstrates the ability to quickly integrate state-of-the-art laser detection into the existing envelope of the AN/AAR-47 missile warning system. This is accomplished with no changes to the A-kit wiring while improving overall sensor reliability and significantly lowering sensor life cycle cost. The total weight of the LWS function in each sensor is less than 5 ounces and draws less than 3 watts of power.

All BAE Systems LWS solutions detect and report laser-guided and aided threats well outside of their lethal range. These threats include laser range finders and designators in all of our solutions, and laser beam rider missile systems in our more advanced systems.

Depending upon the application requirements, BAE Systems LWS solutions provide the operator reliable laser threat warning that can include threat class identification and mid-to-high resolution Angle of Arrival (AoA) data within milliseconds of illumination. Up to seven simultaneous threats can be processed and reported by each sensor. The sensitivity of the system is designed to be scalable so that very low-energy threats are detected at a safe distance while also maintaining a best-in-industry false alarm rate.

BAE Systems LWS solutions are the laser detector of choice for the following U.S. aircraft, as well as numerous foreign military aircraft:
