Optical Sampling Techniques

Many modern systems require the digitisation of multi-octave microwave signals with high dynamic range performance.

In particular such requirements apply to ESM systems and wide band modes that will be required for multi-function radars. While conventional electrical Analogue to Digital Convertors (ADC) are continually increasing their performance, it is clear that in the medium term (5 to 10 years) the system performance required will outstrip the performance available.

Optical sampling techniques hold out the prospect of increasing the effective sampling rate available. The Advanced Technology Centre has developed and constructed a demonstrator system using Lithium Niobate switch technology to assess the performance achievable using this type of technology.
