Rapidly deployable HF radar
HF radar has been developed to demonstrator status over the period 1980-2000. It has attributes that make it ideal for the homeland defence application, i.e. day/night operation, long endurance, all weather, large area search capability (beyond the horizon) and a capability to detect air and sea targets.
Recent experiments have demonstrated the detection of small fast boats beyond the horizon. HF Radar is in essence a low cost technology, but the major barrier to exploitation has been associated with non-mobility of large fixed installations that are conventionally proposed.
The ATC is developing a rapidly redployable version, transportable in a commercial van or small truck which can be set up by two people in about two hours.
