Passive radar detection scenario

Research and development of passive multiband target detection and tracking systems. These exploit existing signals from communications and broadcast services, known as 'transmitters of opportunity' to detect and track air targets.

We have an impressive history in radar development and has contributed novel technologies into UK radar systems. As part of this the department has considerable research and practical background into the bistatic radar and passive detection fields using advanced trilateration/cross correlation techniques.

Much of this work was originally designed for military applications, but now has a dual role with commercial and homeland security applications. Continuing research programmes on passive detection and tracking using existing radio signals, in the area of ‘transmitters of opportunity’, forward scatter radar and passive coherent location, including flight trials, are being undertaken.
